Focal Elegia, A Review

Seemingly out of nowhere Focal, makers of one of the strongest overall line of dynamic-drivers headphones in the market, announced the Focal Elegia at RMAF. The announcement was, more or less, missed by most hi-fi media — perhaps overshadowed by the many announcements of hi-fi gear with obscene price tags.

Eventually the announcement made its way to the hi-fi community via word-of-mouth, so to speak. Within couple of weeks of the announcement most hi-fi gear shops were taking pre-orders and some began shipping these cans the week after— props to Focal for appropriately planning and supplying their vendors with enough can to meet demand.

Given the pedigree and universal positive reception of their headphones from the Elex to the Utopia, I decided to get on the Elegia bandwagon.

My first thought was to review in relative terms with respect to my trusty and friendly AudioQuest NightOwl. However, the more I tried to A/B-compare the NightOwl and the Elegia, the more I began to realize that these two headphones aren’t competing, they’re complement each other and so I decided it would make more sense to give the Elegia its own review.
